Higher Education Emergency Relief Funding (HEERF)

Mayland Community College Higher Education Emergency Relief Funding (HEERF) will be distributed to all students enrolled in the Summer 2022 term, including students in certain Workforce and Continuing Education classes and Pre-College/Basic Skills courses!

These funds will be distributed as a direct payment to students to help offset the cost of equipment, books, technology, transportation, etc., and will be awarded in addition to any state or federal financial aid for which the student is eligible as long as funds are available.

  • $1,000 - Any student enrolled in a Workforce/Continuing Education class listed below that are 96 hours or more.
  • $500 - Any student enrolled in a Workforce/Continuing Education class listed below that are 24-95 hours.
  • $500 - Any qualified student enrolled in a GED® class. CLICK HERE for more info.

Electrical Technician

Qualified electricians are always in demand. This Electrical Technician Level I class is based on the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) curriculum. Electricians read blueprints, solve complex math problems, and install electrical systems (all while adhering to numerous electrical and building codes). Due to extensive job training, most electricians are qualified to choose among a variety of work environments, including construction, electrical maintenance, commercial, residential, and contracting. Phlebotomy

Phlebotomists are medical professionals who work in a variety of settings collecting blood. Generally, the purpose of drawing the blood is for sample work, but Certified Phlebotomy Technicians (CPT) may be responsible for conducting patient interviews, checking vital signs, and transporting the blood samples to a laboratory for testing purposes. Nutritional Dietitian Manager Training

Nutritional Dietary Manager Part 1

Are you interested in a career that allows you to help people maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle? The nutritional dietary manager program will help you prepare to become a certified dietary manager. Training will include both course work and lab experience working with a Registered Dietitian. Certified Coding Associate

$1,000 HEERF Funds Available

This program will provide students with the skills and basic information needed to prepare to become a Certified Coder and may also open entry level doors to opportunities in the health specialty of medical coding. Individuals in this field of study may work in hospitals and/or other medical office settings where it is necessary to assign codes for billing and insurance purposes.  Students in this program may get help paying for class by calling 828.766.1297.

Concrete 101

$500 HEERF Funds Available

There is more to concrete than mixing and pouring.  In this beginner’s class, students will leave with an understanding of density, material AD-mixture, and test procedures.  Other topics will include; curing compounds, formwork, materials, and systems used when working with concrete.   

Welding

$1,000 HEERF Funds Available

This course will teach three major processes: SMAW, GMAW, GTAW (stick, mig, and tig), as well as cutting. Power sources, wire-feed setup, maintenance, shielding gases, and safe practices will be covered. Lecture, demonstration, and practical applications will be used in this course. Preregistration is required. Students in this program may get help paying for the class.  

Blacksmithing: Sharpen Your Skills

Improve your blacksmithing skills by applying fundamental forging techniques. Create a variety of different projects while learning techniques.  

Veterinary Assisting

$1,000 HEERF Funds Available

Learn how to interact with animals and their owners, obtain animal health histories and records, and understand veterinary medical terminology. Recognize the major breeds of various animals, assist the veterinarian with caring for animals, assist with surgical and treatment procedures, and recognize signs and symptoms of illness and disease. Massage Therapy

This program provides participants with the basic information and skills needed to take the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Exam (MBLEx) offered by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB). Graduates who pass this exam may apply for licensure to practice in North Carolina. Students will be prepared to work in direct care settings to provide manipulations, methodical pressure, friction, and kneading of the body’s soft tissues to support wellness throughout the lifespan. Graduates who become licensed should qualify for employment opportunities in hospitals and other medical settings, rehabilitation centers, sport or health clubs, retirement communities, day spas, resorts, and private practice. Paralegal Certificate Studies Program

The Paralegal Studies Program prepares students who already possess an associate degree or a bachelor's degree for a career as a Paralegal. The paralegal curriculum is divided into paralegal skills courses and law coursework. The North Carolina State Bar Board of Paralegal Certification has approved and designated Mayland Community College’s paralegal

Tomahawk Forging & Bushcraft Knives

$500 HEERF Funds Available

Forging a tomahawk is a great starter project for blacksmithing. Forging the head will introduce students to the basic practice of drawing & shaping steel as well as forge-welding and heat treating to harden the edge. Students will forge a traditional style “wrap-around” tomahawk head and will shape/ fit the handle form provided hardwood blanks. Then students will personalize & complete this “hawk” with traditional details & embellishments of their choosing. Open to all levels of experience. Second part of this class students will hand forge a primitive/bushcraft utility knife suited for versatile outdoor use. Basic knife forging, heat treating, handle fitting, and sharpening will be covered. This is a time intensive class. It is recommended that the student have some prior forging experience if they wish to finish a knife blade. For those beginners and less experienced, this class is suited as an introduction provided the student understands that their knife might not be completed during the time allotted.

Introduction to Sports Broadcasting

Do you dream of becoming a Sports Broadcaster? Are you a big fan of sports? Then join John Williams, a commentator for ESPN in this introductory class to learn more about this exciting field. Topics will include qualities of a successful broadcaster, roles explained including play by play, color commentary, sideline reporting, talk shows and more. John will also teach you how to build your career and how to stand out with demo tapes and resumes.  

Event Planning

Are you organized? Do you pay great attention to detail? Are you a good listener with a positive attitude? You may have what it takes to be an Event Planner! From consultation to logistics, learn to create an event that provides memories for years to come. From weddings to corporate events, learn what it takes to have a career in the event planning industry. This class is conducted in a virtual format to accommodate a flexible learning environment.  

Applications of 3D Printing

$500 HEERF Funds Available

If you want to learn how to print different materials and use 3D printing to make a scanner, this hands-on class is for you. The class will print different materials for different applications to remake a part out of plastic. The class will also use 3D printing to build a 3d scanner that will function to model and print various items. The class will touch on how 3D printing can be used to assist Machining. Basic knowledge of 3D printing is a plus but not required.

Class is fee-waived for qualifying individuals who are unemployed, “underemployed,” or who have received notice of layoff or pending layoff.

OCTOBER CLASSES

NCCER Carpentry Class

Finish Carpenty

$500 HEERF Funds Available

This class will involve framing to complete the structural portion of a building per 2018 IRC requirements. This includes installing shingles roof, building wrap, windows, and doors. The class will also cover installing exterior siding, trim, and flashing to prevent water intrusion. An in-depth discussion of material options, work methods, and estimation will be included. Safety will be a major topic. Personal protective equipment will be provided and must be worn.  

Basic Gunsmithing: Understanding Basic Fire Arm Systems

$500 HEERF Funds Available

This course will cover the mechanics of firearms systems and how to use that knowledge to diagnose and repair them. Instruction will include design and function theory of firearms as it pertains to repair or modification. Trouble-shooting and critical-thinking will be key components of the class. The instructor will assist students in understanding how various firearms systems function and how they are likely to malfunction.

Welding Skills for the Farm

Learn the basic skills of stick and mig welding as well as the cutting process needed to repair broken equipment and tools on the farm. Understanding safe welding practices will be covered through lectures, demonstrations, and practical applications.
