Mayland Community College Announces Dr. Aron Gabriel as New President

The Mayland Community College (MCC) Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Aron Gabriel as the next President of Mayland Community College.  In accordance with state law, his appointment was approved by the N.C. State Board of Community Colleges at their meeting earlier today.

Dr. Gabriel brings nearly three decades of experience in education, leadership, and community engagement. Most recently, he served as Superintendent of Newton-Conover City Schools. Under his leadership, the district maintained strong academic performance, expanded career and technical education opportunities, and built meaningful partnerships to benefit students and the broader community.

We are pleased to have Dr. Gabriel as the next president of Mayland Community College and look forward to working with him as we continue to serve the people of Avery, Mitchell and Yancey counties, said Bryan Peterson, Chair of the Mayland Community College Board of Trustees.  “We believe that he will continue the strong tradition of academic excellence and community involvement that Mayland has established and we are excited for what the future holds.”

Dr. Gabriel has long been an advocate for connecting education to real-world opportunities. In his previous roles, he worked closely with community colleges to increase student access to career pathway programs, college credit opportunities, and workforce credentials. He brings that same commitment to serving the residents of Avery, Mitchell, and Yancey counties, the communities at the heart of Mayland’s mission.

He holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Western Carolina University, as well as advanced degrees from Appalachian State University and UNC-Charlotte. He began his career as a teacher and coach, and his leadership journey has included roles as a principal, associate superintendent, and superintendent. In every role, he has maintained a deep focus on students, equity, and regional impact.

Beyond his professional life, Dr. Gabriel is active in service through organizations like Hearts and Hope Inc., volunteers with his family to support people facing homelessness, and teaches youth Sunday School at his local church.

"I’m honored to be named the next President of Mayland Community College. Mayland’s values—Community, Opportunity, and Excellence—deeply resonate with me, and I believe I’ve been called by the Lord to serve here. I’m grateful to the Board of Trustees for this opportunity.   I look forward to working with Mayland's incredible staff, students, and community partners to build on its strong legacy. In the wake of Hurricane Helene, the College has been a vital force in restoring hope and opportunity, and it’s a privilege for me to join that continued effort.”
