Class Descriptions
Cost: $990
Instructor: Bob Nulf
So you’ve wanted to learn to oil paint for how long? Or, you’ve gotten to a certain level in your painting and are looking to “take the next step”. Maybe you’re an accomplished painter looking for a chance to get away and “just paint.” This is your workshop!!!
Here’s the perfect opportunity to learn basic oil painting skills with a group of other creative folk enjoying a week-long getaway in the mountains. Perhaps you haven’t painted since high school (or earlier), this workshop provides a supportive atmosphere for artists at all levels of experience. We’ll be working with a limited non-toxic palette; the limited palette makes it much easier to mix the colors you’ll want for your painting. While all Bob’s demonstrations will be done in oils, his murals are acrylic paintings so he’s prepared to help you take the next step in whatever medium you’re working. The workshop will cover the basics of creating a meaningful painting: drawing, composition, values, color and criticism.
Here is your opportunity to try a new painting medium, exercise some old skills or just kick back and paint for a week! Come be a part of this workshop!

INSTRUCTOR
Brenda Roberts: Watercolor has been a creative passion of mine since high school. After years of taking classes and workshops, I began teaching a small beginner watercolor class in my home in 2023. What started as an eight-week course quickly grew into an ongoing weekly gathering, and I’ve since formed additional watercolor groups after moving from California to Minnesota.
I hold a BA in Music with an emphasis in piano performance, along with minors in Voice
and Psychology. Currently I work as a piano and watercolor instructor, and church
musician.
With more than 35 years of experience teaching and performing, I especially enjoy working with adult learners. I see myself as a coach—encouraging curiosity, confidence, and personal expression—rather than a traditional instructor. I’m organized, prepared, and enjoy finding creative ways to make concepts accessible and enjoyable.
I’ve attended the Wild Acres Art Retreat twice, in 2022 and 2025, and find the setting both
beautiful and deeply inspiring—a wonderful place to create, connect, and grow artistically.

Instructor: Judy McSween
This week-long oil/acrylic painting course invites you to explore abstraction through the lens of landscape, drawing inspiration from the breathtaking surroundings of the retreat. Building on core abstract principles, we’ll focus on strong composition, intentional color mixing, and expressive mark-making techniques as tools for translating the essence of place rather than its literal details.
Each day will include guided sketchbook exercises and demonstrations designed to help you break down what you see—rhythm, movement, color relationships, and spatial tension—and reimagine it in abstract form. The surrounding landscape will serve as a continual source of inspiration, offering endless visual prompts to spark new ideas and approaches.
Students will be encouraged to experiment, adapt, and follow their curiosity. While structured exercises provide a strong foundation, flexibility is central to this course—allowing each artist to work at their own pace, respond intuitively to the environment, and develop a personal visual language.
Whether you thrive on guidance or prefer open exploration, this course offers a supportive, creative space to play, take risks, and grow.

Instructor: Kari Waltz
Join Kari Waltz for a unique journaling workshop utilizing watercolor and gouache. Whether you have always wanted to capture the scene in front of you, zoom in to draw a plant/object in detail, wish to document your memories, events, or travel, or are looking to embrace your mistakes instead of feeling panicked by them, this course offers an opportunity to try something new. Kari’s guidance will help you explore different approaches to sketching and journaling, encouraging creativity and personal expression. BONUS: She plans to attend a Botanical Sketching workshop in Switzerland in June and will share some of her experiences in this course.
Throughout the class, Kari will support you in considering your choices, using a variety of artistic tools, and combining pictures with words to tell your own story. Journals are deeply personal, reflecting what matters to you, the experiences you have, the places you visit, and quotes that speak to your heart. The class is designed for all skill levels, and while some drawing or painting experience may be helpful, it is not required.
By joining Kari’s journey, you will have the chance to discover your own artistic voice. Regular sketching practice can enhance your studio work and boost your overall creativity. Kari will provide daily demonstrations using her lightweight setup, showing how convenient materials make it possible to create wherever you go. This approach will help you strengthen your drawing and observational skills.
Learning to see and draw from direct observation will also improve your ability to interpret photo references. Kari’s demonstrations will primarily use watercolor, but she will occasionally use gouache for specific scenes. She will also show how to confidently draw with pen and use the Elegant Writer calligraphy marker for expressive sketching. These techniques will give you a variety of "tools in your toolbox," enabling you to confidently face any scene and capture what you see.
Kari will offer optional field trips, both on and off campus, which may require some walking. These excursions provide hands-on experience sketching on location. Participants are encouraged to bring a stool or travel cushion for comfort during these outings.

INSTRUCTOR
Kari Waltz has been teaching art since 2003, and she started working in journals in 2016. She had no idea how painting small watercolor entries on a regular basis would impact her overall artistic journey. Kari primarily worked in oils and pastels in her studio and was not comfortable with plein air painting. She fell in love with the Water Brush (Pentel Large Aquash Brush), and the freedom this tool gave her was invigorating! It made creating on the go convenient, so she no longer had the excuse NOT to create.
Kari has witnessed how working from life will improve anyone’s work. Using her light-weight setup allowed her to paint on location without having to lug the traditional plein air painting setups that are often heavy and cumbersome. She takes her art with her everywhere, and she has learned to relax and play.
Waltz’s larger studio work has been positively influenced by this practice because she has honed her observational and drawing skills. She recently returned from an art trip to Italy where she documented the entire trip. Kari treasures the collection of experiences that have been captured in her journals.
She creates visual diaries. Of all the work she has completed over her lifetime, her journals are what her two daughters want. It’s a record of their mom in picture/word form. Journals are personal: what was important to you, things you experienced, places you visited, quotes that spoke to your heart, and your journey. If you take this journey with her, you will eventually find your own voice. You will be exposed to various ways to approach a scene, choices to contemplate, tools to use, and options to capture your personal story.
If you have ever wanted to sit and capture the scene in front of you, be creative while traveling, learn to embrace your mistakes instead of being panicked by them, or just wanted to try something new, then this class is for you. In 2016, Kari was a novice when it came to watercolor, but she gave herself permission to learn without the pressure of perfection. Let Kari her journey with you.

Inspiration
As John Muir Laws says, “When you celebrate the world through the pages of your journal, every stroke of your brush or pencil can sing a song of gratitude for the opportunity to be alive.”

Instructor: Katelyn Chapman
This class will be an in-depth study of the human portrait through the process of oil painting with a limited 4-color palette, known as the Zorn Palette. Working from a live model, photo references, and master copies, we will explore gesture, structure, proportions, and facial anatomy. We will learn how to manage hue and chroma and how to create a wide spectrum of colors using only titanium white, ivory black, cadmium red, and yellow ochre. We will also cover the basic handling of materials, brush management, and surface preparation. Foundational drawing knowledge and experience working with the human form at least through drawing will be helpful; however, the Zorn Palette is great for beginner painters.
